Panama Canal Expansion & San Lorenzo Fort
Panama Canal Expansion & San Lorenzo Fort Tour Description
This day your guide will drive you coast to coast to the Caribbean coast to see the new expanded Panama Canal, where you will learn about the massive mega-project that was the Panama Canal Expansion. This is the single most important project for the Panamanian economy and it is valued in over 5 billion dollars! After seeing the new locks, we will drive to the San Lorenzo Fort where you will see the ruins of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On the way to the fort we will go through lush jungle and your guide will stop the car to try and spot monkeys and other wildlife. There are several types of forest in the San Lorenzo Protected Area, most of them high-humidity ecosystems. These include semi-deciduous forests, moist forests, floodable cativo forests and mangroves.
Important Note: Due to the construction of a new bridge, the only way to visit San Lorenzo right now requires taking a ferry to the other side of the Canal. This is usually not a problem, but the waiting time depends on the amount of traffic going through, which can be up to 1 hour. Your guide can provide valuable historic information and interesting facts about the wildlife you can expect to see, but please take notice that there will be waiting time involved.
